I Don’t Just Write About Paleo… I Live It
And I’ve lived it from very early on.
You see, when I first enrolled in medical school over 30 years ago, I knew something was terribly wrong.
I just couldn’t prove it yet.
At the time, I realized we eat and exercise just the way nutritionists and doctors prescribe. But we keep getting sicker and fatter.
Then I came across the work of Dr. Weston Price. He traveled the world documenting the lifestyles and eating habits of the 14 remaining hunter-gatherer cultures he found. He was one of the first to discover our Paleo roots kept us strong and naturally lean.
At around the same time, in 1985, I discovered the work of one of the first Paleo writers, S. Boyd Eaton, who published a paper on Paleo nutrition in the New England Journal of Medicine.
That was a watershed moment for me.
Dr. Price and Dr. Eaton seemed like the only two other people coming to the same conclusion I had:
To get lean and stay that way, we need to eat what came naturally to us for 2 million years of human history. And there’s no evidence against it. Fewer carbs and more fat keep you thin.
I didn’t know it then, but in my mind I began to formulate the remedy for the modern problem of rapid, uncontrollable weight gain.
But the answer didn’t come easily.
Cutting Calories Only to Gain More Weight
When I first started my medical practice in 1990, the thinking was that calories were all the same. More calories meant more weight, less calories less weight.
Then a young woman came to see me. We’ll call her L.S. She was 5 foot 2 and weighed 170 pounds. She had been trying to lose weight for two years.
“No matter how little I eat, my weight just keeps going up.”
When I asked her about exercise, she insisted, “I work as a waitress and I’m on the run for 10 hours a day. And I’m up to working out for 90 minutes 5 times a week.”
I told her to cut her daily calories to 1600 and see me in 2 weeks. She did this diligently and brought me a complete record.
Her weight went up by 4 pounds.
I told her to bring down her calories to 1400 per day.
She gained 4 more pounds.
I cut her to 1200, then 1000 calories, and again she gained weight. Only now she had no energy, and couldn’t make herself go to the gym anymore. She was feeling depressed.
She still wanted to lose weight. So I told her to cut her calories to 800 and see me again in 2 weeks. I never saw her again, and she didn’t return the calls from my office. If I could, I would apologize to her and tell her what we did wrong.
Cutting Calories Doesn’t Work…
Controlling Your Metabolism DOES
Calories are not all the same. It depends on where they come from, and what they do to your metabolism.
As you’ll discover, your body uses hormones to control your appetite and fat storage. These hormones play a central role in your metabolism, and determine if you end up fat and hungry, or slim and satisfied.
Calories that come from protein and fat have a neutral effect on these metabolic hormones. Calories that come from carbs and other processed foods have a negative effect.
So, when I say your metabolism is wrecked, it’s because our modern diet has caused BIG problems for the hormones that determine how much fat you burn, and how much fat you store.
In essence, these hormones get “short circuited.”
And that’s why it’s so hard to lose weight and keep it off.

But I didn’t see a single fat person.
In fact, the ONLY overweight people I saw in Rome were American tourists.
This may surprise you, but Italians have some of the lowest rates of weight gain and obesity in the world.
When I got home I looked into this, and discovered something that will help you fight fat right off the bat. I experienced this myself during my first round of research… I’m talking about the closest you’ll ever come to effortless weight-loss.
Here’s how it works.
Fattening Carbs Wiped Out By “Magic Bean”?
While the Italians take their time with a meal, go for long walks, and are more likely to buy fresh organic produce from local markets… there’s something else I attribute this slimming effect to, and that’s following earlier traditions of eating.
You see, Italians are known for eating soups before the main meal, and one of the most famous is pasta fagioli, their “pasta and beans” recipe.
The remarkable thing about this particular bean is that it STOPS fattening carbs from breaking down into the sugar your body stores as fat. Instead, it preserves carbs as fiber, which does NOT break down into fat.
When I looked into the research I was floored:
A new study I discovered in the medical journal Obesity found people taking an extract of this bean lost 6 pounds in 30 days… without changing anything else.1
Losing 6 pounds without changing your overall diet or exercise routine is a nice surprise. But that’s not all it can do.
A study published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences followed people for 30 days. One group took this Italian bean extract, the other took a placebo, or dummy pill.
On average, the people taking the Italian bean extract:2
- LOST over 5 pounds of body fat (over 6 pounds of total body weight).
- LOST 3 inches off their waists.
- LOST 2 inches off their hips.
- LOST 1 inch off each thigh.
- Maintained their muscle, or lean body mass.
More importantly, the researchers wrote that with the Italian bean extract, “the major weight changes are brought about more by fat loss,” than things like water loss, and organ shrinkage.
When you deprive yourself on a diet, water loss—and even organ shrinkage—are often the real reason you “lose weight.” That’s why I don’t recommend getting on a scale.
What you really need is FAT LOSS.
And that’s what you get with the white Italian kidney bean.
In fact, the prestigious British Medical Journal took a look at ALL studies on this white Italian bean to determine fat loss. They found this extract makes a “significant difference” in fat loss compared to a placebo.3

The 3rd messenger is actually a bad guy you want to keep under control. It’s called glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. This enzyme turns blood sugar into fat. Not what you want.

Dr. Gil Kaats and a team of researchers from the Health and Medical Research Foundation and the University of Texas Health Science Center studied over 150 people to see if they would lose fat just from taking chromium.
They split them into three groups. One group received a placebo (dummy pill). The other two groups received chromium. Keep in mind that the participants were told not to change anything about their diet, exercise habits or how much they ate. In essence, they were allowed to do whatever they wanted.
After three months, the group taking the placebo showed no changes. The chromium group lost between 3.4 and 4.6 pounds of body fat.10 In addition, the chromium groups gained an average of 1.4 pounds of pure muscle. Not bad for doing absolutely nothing!
It may sound too good to be true, and I would NEVER recommend that you eat junk food, or skip your fitness routine, but I’ve treated hundreds of patients with chromium – always with good results.
And it does more than just burn fat. Chromium supports your blood sugar and improves your body’s response to insulin, the hormone that controls fat storage and production.
That’s critical if you’re going to recharge your metabolism to be as efficient and powerful as our ancestors enjoyed.
